Benefits of buying established web sites

Some people make a living telling others how easy it is to start, market, and run a web site profitably. For the most part, that's just not true. Finding an unsaturated market to profit in is hard enough and even if you succeed at that, you have months if not years of hard work ahead of you in the way of marketing, SEO, and site development before you have anything to write home to mom about. If you're up to the challenge of starting from scratch, more power to you. But if you're looking for a way to quickly get involved with online business, you have an option:

5 Domain Buying Mistakes

Aaron Kuroiwa's mugshot ...Aaron said this on May 22nd 2008

So I’ve come up on my 1 year anniversary of domain name investing. I’m by no means a pro, full time domainer nor extremely successful. After 1 year I’m probably $900 in the hole but I’ve learned a lot and see that there’s money to be made if you’re smart. So hopefully this short article will help you avoid some basic mistakes that I’ve made. To give you some ideas of where I’m at as a domainer here some rounded portfolio stats.

My Portfolio Stats:

Domains: 375
Earned from sales or parking: $1,100
Earned from developing: $400
Spent: $2,500

Total: -$900

So here is my list of I-wish-knew-this-before mistakes …

Some Incoming Aesthetic Updates ...

As decent-looking and somewhat eye-pleasing the current design of the FlipSquare homepage is, it could always use a few usability enhancements to make things a bit easier on you, the user. That's why I took the time today to come up with a few interface updates to do just that. Click on the image to a full preview of what's in store for everyone this upcoming Friday.

Things to look out for when buying a website: Refunds

Eric Windsor's mugshot ...Eric said this on May 21st 2008

When buying an e-commerce site many times the site's owner will list all of the profit whilst holding back information about the number of refunds that have been issued. This is especially apparent with informational products like eBooks.

Always request full revenue screen shots from the seller. It's fine if they cross out the identifiable customer information, but if you see entire lines missing from their screen shots, more often than not that's a refund entry.

Now, that being said, a refund here and there is normal, in fact it's probably better to see them sporadically than not at all. But before you invest in a site you need to dial in an accurate rate of refund. Without it you're bottom line is up in the air.

A quick thank you

Thanks to everyone who's helped us so far tracking down bugs and giving us feedback/suggestions for making the site better. It's already been quite the learning experience and FlipSquare is improving greatly everyday. Undoubtedly we're becoming more and more in tune with the ideal sale flow when buying and selling websites and domains.

When the beta is over we have a special gift for those of you who took the time to list your website or domain for sale. We also have some contests in the pipeline that should be launching soon so if you haven't already, subscribe to the FlipSquare blog.

Side note: If you don't want to sign up for the Lighthouse bug tracking system, that's ok - but we still really need your feedback so if it's easier, just send an e-mail to hello@flipsquare.com and we'll add it to the tracker on your behalf.

We’re still in the process of getting everything up and running. Please bare with us as we bring the site up live in front of your eyes. If you encounter any errors, please use our bug tracking system here.

For the next 3-5 days there will be a few test listings scattered in with the real ones. They should be easy to spot but if you have a question or concern, please shoot an e-mail to hello@flipsquare.com and we’ll get back to you right away.

We’re excited to bring you FlipSquare and hope that you’ll find it extremely functional and easy to use. All feedback is appreciated, again just shout it out to hello@flipsquare.com.

See you soon,
